Belmont

Belmont is a village located in County Durham. The year 1852 brought great change to the area because of the growth in local collieries, a new church which was dedicated to St. Mary Magdalen, a library and a school. Belmont does not appear on the early maps held in the Durham County Record Office. Belmont originally takes it name from Belmont Hall which was built in 1820 to replace the previous building known as Ramside. When the estate was sold during the mid 1960’s the hall became a hotel and the old name was resurrected as ‘Ramside Hall.’
