Bowburn is a village located in County Durham. Bowburn was originally called Cassop-cum-
Quarrington. Before Bowburn became a mining colliery it was considered a small settlement. When the colliery first opened in the early 20 th century permission was given to build colliery houses. At the time Bowburn was described as only having around 400 residents with a Wesleyan Chapel and a primary school.
Moving forward to the mid 1920’s Bowburn was classed as a much larger settlement, 2 more Methodist churches were under construction and further terrace houses were being built. After 1945 there was a huge increase in new buildings and council housing which continued until the present day.
Now in 2019 the population is considered to be around 5,080 people with local businesses including a co-operative, post office, petrol station, hairdressers, an infants/nursey and primary school. There is also a local community centre which continues to celebrate the history of Bowburn and bring its residents together.
